"Until the killing of black men, black mothers' sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother's son, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens."
Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III has been reflecting on these words by civil rights leader Ella Baker and how history demonstrates that we can become a better society—but only if we demand it from each other and from the institutions responsible for administering justice.
Baker was a skilled organizer who worked at the national level, empowered local groups, trained fellow leaders and was, to many, the mother of the movement. She also encouraged women and young people to assume positions of leadership.
This photo from @smithsonianfolklife shows Baker at a peace march and rally in New York City in April 1968.
