Mahler, a white driver, raced for the team. Originally, Mahler was brought on to mentor Benny Scott for the race. The first black driver in the Indy 500 raced in 1991.  In 1973, Miller started the Black American Racers Inc. racing team. He also founded the Black American Racers Association (BARA) with Wendell Scott, Ron Hines, and Malcolm Durham. The association’s goal was encourage and support more African Americans to be involved in all types of motorsports—stock car, open-wheel, and drag racing.
