Kaplan organized a coming of age ceremony for his daughter, Judith Kaplan, that adopted many of the elements of a bar mitzvah. In his diary, Rabbi Kaplan described the ceremony as a "bat mitzvah." By the late 1900s, bat mitzvahs were a common feature of life of Jewish communities around the globe.  In 1983, Sarah Leavitt celebrated her own bat mitzvah with a party—and a new dress.
