#BlackLivesMatter
We have a platform, a voice, and a duty to our members, employees, artists, visitors and followers to speak up and stand for human rights and anti-racism. Nobody should have to live in fear because of the colour of their skin.
Chris Ofili’s artwork is a tribute to the London teenager Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993. In this eight-foot tall painting, each of the tears shed by the woman is a tiny collaged image of Stephen Lawrence’s face, while the words ‘R.I.P. Stephen Lawrence’ are barely visible beneath the layers of paint.
Ofili intended this painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy and grief. We are grieving with you—for Stephen, for George Floyd, and all the people who suffer at the hands of prejudice and violence.
