The graceful princess suddenly reveals herself as a demon!! In Kabuki, there is a genre of dance with transformation where one actor plays two completely different characters.
In this dance play, the actor plays a female role in the first half, and a role of a monster such as a demon or a snake in the second half.
After the transformation, the character dramatically changes the costumes and makeup.
This is my drawing of the transformation from the graceful princess into a demon in the mountain from the dance play “Momijigari from Shin-KabukiJūhachiban (the new best eighteen plays)” inspired by a Noh play. You can see how quickly I do the makeup. “Momijigari”(or Maple Viewing) is a story about samurai warriors visiting the mountain to enjoy autumn leaves. They meet a beautiful princess but she actually is a demon and tries to attack them.

おしとやかな姫は・・・実は鬼だった！！ 歌舞伎には、変化物(へんげもの)という、全くタイプの違うお役を一人の役者が演じ分けるジャンルの舞踊があります。前半は女形(女性役)を勤め、後半は鬼だったり蛇だったり化け物を勤めたり。
その際、扮装、そしてお化粧もガラッと変わります！
絵は、お能から着想を得た歌舞伎舞踊「新歌舞伎十八番の内　紅葉狩」より、おしとやかな姫から山に棲む鬼へと変わる様を描いたもの。この早拵えのお化粧の過程です！ 「紅葉狩」は紅葉を愛でにやってきた侍の一行を、お姫様に化けた山の鬼が騙し、襲おうとするというお話。
美しい姫が鬼だったなんて・・・。
人は、見た目で判断してはいけませんね😭
