In 1960, Peter Saul began pursuing an interest in the formal possibilities of American consumer products with his "Ice Box" paintings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In "Ice Box Number 1" (1960), the refrigerator is practically bursting with assorted objects. But a closer look reveals more troubling imagery—hammers, a disembodied hand holding a gun—which Saul borrowed from comic books and bathroom graffiti, mining the fascination with sex and violence at the heart of American culture. On view now as part of "Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thursday at 7 p.m., hear Saul discuss his work with Massimiliano Gioni, Edlis Neeson Artistic Director of the New Museum. Tickets at link in bio. #PeterSaul ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
