Painted red to resemble wood – a scarce material in Egypt – this stone false door comes from the tomb of Ptahshepses. He was a high priest of the god Ptah, the chief god of Egypt’s then-capital Memphis.

False doors were common in ancient Egyptian tombs, acting as a threshold between the worlds of the living and the dead. However, this door is unprecedented in scale and content, measuring over 4 metres wide by 3 metres tall.

It contains a full and detailed account of Ptahshepses’ life. He probably designed the door himself around 2400 BC in his role as a high priest, which involved strict supervision of all tomb decoration in Memphis.
