The show will detail the rise of Tantra, and look at how the belief in divine feminine power and the popularity of goddess worship challenged traditional models of womanhood – and how it went on to influence contemporary feminist thought and artistic practice today. This 3m-tall artwork by Bengal-born British artist Sutapa Biswas – titled ‘Housewives with Steak-Knives’ – confronts stereotypes by depicting the ‘Housewife’ as the goddess Kali, wearing a garland of heads. Kali was seen as an icon of strength, reimagined during British colonial rule of India as a symbol of resistance and revolution. Read more via the link in our bio.
