As a parent, husband and fan I’m shaken. I’m trying to process all of it and I keep coming up short. I met Kobe at Sherman’s softball game. We were on the same team. At first I tried to play it cool in the locker room, thinking what do I even say to Kobe Bryant. We all took a picture together and I was gonna leave it at that, but he pulled me aside and started asking questions about my writing process. We discussed where creativity comes from and he talked about his own writing. I couldn’t believe that someone who was always larger than life would be genuinely interested in what I did and what motivated me. I quickly realized that Kobe is a seeker. One of those rare humans who doesn’t put himself on a pedestal in any way, just soaks up the world that’s in front of him. Someone who was constantly trying to evolve and go deeper. I have always respected his craft and lived in awe for what he did on the court, but I left that conversation and that day with a deep admiration for Kobe Bryant the human. For his humility and grace. For always pushing himself and uplifting everyone around him in the process. He is a legend and will be remembered as such for the rest of time.
