The cooling monsoonal rains were inundating the outback, making it difficult to move around. Fast-forward to today: the humidity is hovering at 1% with no chance of rain. That was just my anecdotal experience, but I was there because Australians rely on the cooling rains year after year during this season—and indeed the rains came in 2004. This young Aboriginal girl is hunting for mud crabs in the water-soaked landscape.
