Found throughout a number of countries in Africa, the northern spur-winged goose gets its name from a single sharp spike along each wing edge, which is a good deterrent when threatened by predators. It is partially migratory, travelling seasonally in search of dependable water sources. This species is never too far from a body of water, preferring wetland areas with nearby grasslands that provide food and shelter. During the winter, the geese will rest during the day perched in a tree, venturing to the ground to feed early in the morning and at night. Its diet consists predominantly of plant matter such as the seeds of grasses, aquatic plants, agricultural grain, and fruit, though the spur-winged goose has also been known to take small fish or insects on occasion. Similar to other species of geese species, this bird is threatened by uncontrolled hunting.
