Lacquered objects require immense skill and patience to create – hundreds of layers of lacquer could be built up and left to dry, and then carved to create finely detailed decoration like in this dish.

The material is made from the sap of the Chinese lacquer tree mixed with pigments. Crafted in 1489 in China, this example uses red, green, yellow and black lacquer to depict a historical scene – a 4th-century poetry and drinking party known as the ‘Orchid Pavilion Gathering’.
