🐉 This colourful cloisonné jar was made in 15th-century China. The enamel decoration shows a vigorous-looking dragon chasing a pearl through clouds.

Brightly coloured enamelled objects like this were once thought to be vulgar and garish, but by the early 1400s they were considered suitable for the emperor’s palace – the reign mark suggests this jar was used in the Imperial Household.
