Did you know the Museum has an X-ray imaging laboratory hidden deep underground?

The lab operates at 450,000 volts – that’s 90,000 times more than a phone charger – and up to 2,000 X-ray images are used to create a 3D picture, like the one in the first image.

This brass ewer was made in the 12th century in Herat, Afghanistan. It’s inlaid with silver and decorated with small birds. By scanning the ewer in our X-ray imaging lab, Museum scientists discovered the bird heads were made by hammering outwards from the inside of the vessel.
