What’s that fungus (Fomes fomentarius)? One of its common names is hoof fungus, thanks to its resemblance an ungulates’ foot. It’s also known as tinder fungus because it can be used to start fires. When “Ötzi the Iceman” was discovered in the Ötzal Alps in 1991, the roughly 5,300-year-old frozen Neolithic man was discovered with this fungus and several flint stones, presumably for starting fires. You can spot this species in forests in the northern hemisphere, where it tends to grow on birch trees.
