Do you recognize the woman in profile on this 1970s campaign poster? Here's a hint: as a member of Congress, she led efforts to create an annual #WomensEqualityDay in the United States. . .⬇️ A lifelong New Yorker, Bella Abzug was a lawyer and social activist who devoted much of her career to advocating for women's rights. In 1970, Abzug took on a 14-year incumbent to win her seat in Congress. Her campaign slogan? "This woman's place is in the House...the House of Representatives!" Swipe to see the slogan on one of Abzug's early campaign posters, as well one of her iconic hats. 📷
In Congress, Abzug championed anti-war and civil rights legislation, and she spearheaded a campaign to designate August 26 as #WomensEqualityDay. Why August 26? On August 26, 1920, the U.S. Secretary of State signed and certified the 19th Amendment—officially making the pledge that voting rights "shall not be denied or abridged. . .on account of sex" part of the U.S. Constitution. On August 26, 1970—50 years after the 19th Amendment—more than 100,000 women marked the anniversary by marching in support of women’s rights and gender equality. 🗳️ In 1973, Abzug succeeded in creating an annual #WomensEqualityDay. Joint resolution H.J. Res. 52 authorizes and requests that the U.S. President proclaim August 26 "Women's Equality Day." Richard Nixon was the firstpresident to issue a #WomensEqualityDay proclamation. His message emphasized that suffrage was "only the first step toward full and equal participation of women in our Nation's life. . .much still remains to be done. American women, though they represent a majority of our population, still suffer from myriad forms of discrimination." #BecauseOfHerStory #WomensHistory #AmericanHistory #VoteHistory #AmericanDemocracy #19thAmendment #19thAt100 #NYHistory #NYCHistory #PoliticalHistory #CivicEngagement
