Only you can prevent forest fires! Smokey the Bear (actually his given name is Smokey Bear) made his debut 75 years ago today. From the mid '40s to the early '70s, Forest Service illustrator Harry Rossoll’s “Smokey Says” cartoons appeared in newspapers nationwide. Rossoll used this hat as a basis for the bear’s hat.🐻 Smokey is the mascot of one of the nation’s longest-running public service advertising campaigns—and he’s captured the nation’s attention. In 1966, a TV special, “The Ballad of Smokey the Bear,” premiered on Thanksgiving, featuring music by Johnny Marks (known for holiday hits like “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”) Swipe ➡️ to see sheet music from the show. bieniek55 When I was in elementary school, (1965) my friend’s grandfather came to school dressed as Smokey. Hat, bear face,fur, green pants, and big boots. He was skinny so the fur hung in loose folds. He told us all about fire prevention, “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.” He must have had a shovel too. Was he a Smokey wannabe or was there a sponsored program? Could have been the town’s volunteer fire department I suppose.

kayrich83 Howling and a growling and a sniffing the air. He can spot a fire before it starts to flame! That is why we call him Smokey, that is how he got his name. ....I remember the lyrics!!
