Holiday’s special - Looking down a city from 700m high.

Long ago, when I worked about the concept “Shining Peak” for some ad visual photoshoot, I investigated many sceneries from the peaks in the world. Since then I’m deeply obsessed with the scenes from the peak when people managed to reach.

Rent a car and went up the hill to see the view from the top at night, but surrounded by unexpectedly crazy fog. Could never see anything over 1-2 meters away and I drove up like walking.

At the top (-ish point) I couldn’t recognize I was at the top, and couldn’t see anything from there, couldn’t go further, and finally went back.

The next morning, we went the same way up again. At the top... I could see the observatory and weather radar at the very same point. The scene was completely different from what we saw last night.

I could distantly see the view, cloud and city from the top which was like i was seeing the view directly opening the window from airplane. But after 10 minutes... the carelessness made me fail. The view was encompassed with a dense fog and turned to deep white. It never came to break up and my game this time was over.

It’s so exciting going up... feeling like “managing to go up.” This time I could enjoy gradually going up into the cloud. (turned out to be much higher than Tokyo Sky Tree!) The view over the trees cheers me up “you will lose when you get off the car, take the photo of me and get back to home. Go further to the top!”

その昔広告ビジュアルの撮影案で、Shining Peak (頂上の輝き) というアイディアがあったのだが、ロケ場所を探すために世界のいろいろな頂上からの景色というのを調べて以来、頂上に登った時に見える景色というものに魅せられ続けている。

ビールを我慢し、レンタカーを借りて頂上からの夜の景色を見に上に上がる。予想外の濃霧。山道の真ん中で1・2メートル先が一切見えない状況に。30分の予定を大幅にオーバーして頂上らしきところへ到着。

着いたのかどうかもわからないレベルの濃霧で、見事に何も見えず。。目の前にあった展望台すら気付けず、最後は恐怖に負けて、先へは行かず引き返してしまった。

次の日は朝からもう一度同じ道を上がる。頂上までくると…昨晩引き返したポイントの目の前に、大きな展望台と気象レーダーの建物があった。昨晩は一切何も見えなかったのに。なんだったんだあの濃霧は。一晩の間に建ったんじゃないかというほど、景色が違っていた。

展望台にあがり、地上を見下ろすと、飛行機の窓を開けて直接景色を見ているような、雲の上と街並みがぼんやりと見えた。が……それはわずか10分。油断した。。そのあとはまたあっという間に真っ白な霧に包まれてしまった。その後、霧が晴れることはなく、今回のチャレンジは終了。

登っている時の、なんとかしながら進む感じが本当に楽しい。少しずつ登りながら雲の上まで行くような感覚が味わえた。（調べてみたらスカイツリーよりも高かったのがびっくり）途中木々の向こうに見えるすごい眺めが、今じゃない、ここで止まって撮って下りたら負けだよ、という感じが、本当に頂上までの進みを後押しするのが、たまらんのです。
