What’s that skull? It’s the giant forest hog (Hylochoerus meinertzhageni), an animal still found today! The skull and jaw of this hog from equatorial central Africa show the skull form, and especially the tusklike canines, that are typical of pigs. Unlike the canine teeth of peccaries, those of pigs do not interlock. The upper canines extend upward from the mouth rather than downward, as in most mammals.
