Hermit crabs are always on the hunt for a bigger home. Unlike some of their crustacean relatives, hermit crabs only have armor to cover the front halves of their bodies—leaving their soft hind-parts bare. This is why you see hermit crabs sporting a range of gastropod shells. And since they grow, they’re always searching the market for a larger space. If one hermit crab likes another crab’s shell, it will even start a fight in the hopes of stealing the shell for itself!

They’re so interesting because they’ll use all kinds of things as homes — not just shells!
