Here, you'll find Nisshinkan, a former school for sons of elite samurai, and Tsuruga Castle which was besieged when the Aizu clan remained loyal to the shogun even after he was removed from power. This beautiful inn is in Higashiyama Onsen, a former samurai hot spring resort dating back 1,300 years. Once serving only high-ranking samurai, the inn was converted for commercial use at the start of the 20th century. Built partly over a pond, it features a beautiful garden, with staircases revealing a complex architectural design.
