A week ago, this was an intersection of parking lots. Now it could almost pass for the soul of El Paso. Behind the Walmart where a gunman opened fire, a memorial site has taken shape, with hundreds of bouquets, dancers, mariachis and prayers to commemorate the 22 victims. Memorials erected in the wake of tragedy are often quiet and contemplative, but this one — true to the spirit of the border — has sometimes been noisy and lively, with music and children at play. Flags of the United States, Texas and Mexico flutter side by side. In the confusion after the shooting, people came here. When they felt overwhelmed by a confluence of too many emotions, they cried here. When people sought the embrace of community, this is where they found it. And it has grown large: The gestures of commemoration stretched the length of a small city block. Visit the link in our bio to read more. @callakessler took these photos.
