17 countries around the world are facing the prospect of running out of water, according to new data from the World Resources Institute. Many are arid countries to begin with, while others squander what water they have or rely too heavily on groundwater that has no chance to replenish. Climate change heightens the risk: As rainfall becomes more erratic, the water supply becomes less reliable, and as the days grow hotter, more water evaporates from reservoirs just as demand for water increases. The stakes are increasingly high as more large, thirsty cities around the world — from São Paulo to Cape Town to Los Angeles — continue to face catastrophic droughts.
