Kate Kavanaugh is a former vegetarian turned butcher. For more than a decade, Kate had stopped eating meat out of a deep love for animal life and respect for the environment. She became a butcher for exactly the same reasons. “I’m basically in this to turn the conventional meat industry on its head,” said @kate_kavanaugh, who is one in a small but successful cadre of like-minded former vegetarians and vegans who have become butchers to offer an alternative to the factory-farming system. They refer to themselves as ethical butchers, and their shops offer meat from animals bred on grassland and pasture, with animal well-being, environmental conservation and less wasteful whole-animal butchery as their primary goals. ‘I used to be an abolitionist, but then decided to own slaves in a humane way. You know, be ethical about it. It’s a great living and I can still remind customers that we have to treat people and the planet ethically.’ Nope, That argument doesn’t work. How about this? ‘I stopped beating my wife, but now I do it in a responsible, nice way.’ Huh, that’s no good either!

A lot of strong reactions to this story w most being very negative. If you are going to raise animals for food then the "one bad day" approach is clearly the most humane. That said, as a species we're eventually going to have to move past that approach to feeding ourselves. The planet just can't sustain it.

We’re all about fighting climate change now, everyone knows dropping meat is one most effective things you could do for it, still NY Times posts this, what a shame. Ethical meat? There’s no such thing. You people are all about ego, no empathy. Disappointing article.

This hole awareness thing, and projection of personal beliefs as standard to live by is getting old. @nytimes Just post a picture of genetically engineered Chinese kittens with knifes and call it a day. #AttentionAbuse

All our meats can be done this way. I went vegetarian for a few yrs but my body needs meat. Lost muscle mass from no meat. I grew up on a farm raised cows and chickens and pigs all natural fed. Best meats ever!😉❤️

There is a bunch of info about climate change and beef production. We all need to eat way more salads for our own health and the health of the world.
