In a colony of thousands, a mother seal ensures she is feeding her own pup by identifying its scent. This is critically important as after giving birth, mothers suckle their pups for just 10 to 14 days. The pups are then abandoned with nothing to eat; they must live solely on fat reserves until they’ve learned to swim and hunt for themselves.
