Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | A giraffe frolics outside Doulouwal Peulh, Niger, a village about 50 miles from the capital of Niamey, where the endangered West African giraffe lives. It is part of the Niger's "giraffe zone," a government-defined region where giraffes and humans coexist. There are currently only 600 West African giraffe alive on the planet. Creating a satellite population in Niger's Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve was vital to helping the long-term survival prospects of the subspecies.
