What do BTS, a seven-member South Korean boy band from Seoul, and The Beatles have in common? They've both had three albums hit the No. 1 spot in America in less than a year.
Members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, skilled dancers, singers and rappers, were brought together through a series of auditions in 2011 and 2012. They debuted in 2013 and signed to South Korean entertainment company Big Hit Entertainment.
The group's popularity exploded in the U.S. in 2017 when they performed at the American Music Awards, but their fan base transcends borders.
Their most recent album, "Map of the Soul: Persona," had more than 3 million preorders internationally and, upon release, shot to No. 1 on iTunes album charts in 89 countries.
Through factors like tourism and merchandise sales, the group is worth $3.6 billion per year to the economy of South Korea, according to the Hyundai Research Institute.
