What’s the perfect medicine for fake health news? An army of medical experts posting on social media to overpower misinformation.
That’s according to Austin Chiang, the first chief medical social media officer at a top hospital.
Though Chiang, who is a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist with a side passion for social media, has more than 20,000 followers on Instagram, he noticed his following pales to some accounts that spread fake health advice. He’s also alarmed by the anti-vaccination content on Facebook and Pinterest.
That’s why he’s working to recruit a team of physicians, nurses, patient advocates, and other health professionals to get online and spread the truth.

“. Measles cases are climbing, with outbreaks across the country, which many health professionals chalk up to parents refusing to vaccinate their children.” im sorry when did “chalk it up” equate to studied and proven said healthcare professionals? “Most consumers dont pour over...” [medical literature or something to that effect] - possibly but there are TONS AND TONS of health and wellness professionals (without medical licenses) THAT DO pour over scientific and medical journals, studies, peer reviewed papers and with way more diligence than MOST licensed prinary care physicians. Why? Because they CARE ENOUGH TO KNOW THE TRUTH and exercise it with more ethics and integrity than a Dr seeing body after body to get their paycheck from the HMOs. Chiang, with his oh so noble initiative 🙄 should also attempt to regulate the misinformation and lack of information coming out of the American healthcare system. I make a living off of fixing people after their doctors completely screw them up. Pharma writes their academia and the govt makes it law- please MDs tell me more about health when the body’s fuel source (FOOD & NUTRITION!!!! Um DUH) is not even adequately covered in ANY conventional medical training. But that nifty little med license makes you an authority. Unreal. Want to say to America- “HELLOOOOO McFLY!!!!????”

@steelcompany10 You realize that the overwhelming majority of us are ALSO victims of the prices set forth by “big pharma” and are constantly looking for ways to help our patients with cheaper yet equally efficacious options. This is exactly the point of @austinchiangmd's incredible initiative to inform the (misinformed) public.

@rishimd you just proved his point sir. Your goal: get them on meds. Your bosses at big Pharma appreciate your dedication and profits provided. Your kickback is in the mail regardless of the 20% off coupon you so generously gave to your patient. What a saint.

@thekitchenphysicianpb exactly they are indoctrinated to treat the symptoms ( even if the physician is a good person, they are brainwashed ) not the causes, treating the causes doesn’t make money for long.
