It’s hard to know where to first look in #DeanaLawson’s photograph “Nation” (2017). At the figure on the left, sitting on the couch, pointing his fingers like a gun at the camera? At the man next to him wearing a terrifying mouth brace? Or at that second image: a startling picture of George Washington’s dentures. The set of teeth, formed in part from the mouths of slaves, is a haunting metaphor for the history and legacy of the African American experience in the United States.

@theoriginalhitman @babybluedue_ I get that much. I wanted to know if anyone actually knew what the brace is for. Is it a medical device, torture device or something the artist or man in the photo created themselves.

Or the photo by the door or the "middle-class" painting, or the guy cut off by the teeth insert that looks like he's gonna hit the head.... Way too much to discuss in one class time!

Tap the tag in the description. The photographer has way better photos than this one. It was just a poor selection from a great body of work in my opinion.
