This documentary about Rosedale, Queens 1978 really affected me. I think of what my parents must have experienced in those days being Latino in NYC and what all the black families had to endure in neighborhoods like this. Things were better here in NY compared to the south but boy it was still a tough world to live in.
Just hearing how the kids spoke broke me down and they spoke so beautifully. It really touched me when that teenager in the 3rd video said she didn’t hate the white children doing all the harm. I would love to see where that teenager and all those kids are now! I hope things turned out better for all of them and I’m realllllly curious to know how some of those Caucasians feel here in 2019! There were many whites that supported equal rights for everyone but I’m curious to know where the ones who were against it live and what/how they think about race now!

We’ve come a long way but it’s a lot easier for us to move backwards than forwards with our Presidents rhetoric. Why repeat the worst parts of history? History is there to teach us a lesson. We have a lot more in common than some believe. We’re all human, we all need the same necessities to survive so why not live in peace?

dkrtist Racism is systemic and generational. I am 1/2 Caucasian and 1/4 Native American 1/4 Spanish. My Pop was Native/Spanish. My mother's family was from the south and her parents wanted nothing to do with him because they thought he was black, but even if they knew his true race I don't believe they would have accepted him. It's pretty obvious that kids are being taught to be racist and it has become a movement, even though many Caucasian people don't see it that way, it is. The kids in this doc were vicious and I would love to see what they think of their actions today. I am placing high hopes in future generations. The young adults nowadays (millennials and gen x) have a lot of pull and are coming into their own by creating, influencing, changing and championing what's acceptable/unacceptable. I am waiting for them to understand that they have the power to create change and stop wasting their influence for things that don't matter. "Influencers" need to use their platforms for important issues. When they start to understand their power and realize that they can start to change the systemic dysfunction of society it will begin the healing process of hate, discrimination and racism. It's not going to start with the older people and I think it's a long, long way off but they are our best hope in creating unity. Hopefully, one day, hate will wash it's way out and let love in...

michmcca Probably some have woken, and sadly some prolly have not. I cried through these videos. Hatred is learned and even being ganged up on by those horrible kids, the girls maintained such grace and dignity. This president has condoned the revival of this behavior, but the truth is white privilege never went away. It is on the plate of every white person to stand and hold themselves accountable for these actions of these children from the past. Yo hold space and say, we did this... so that we can stop doing this from now on.

carlatwirls Wow!!! I grew up in Laurelton/Rosedale area in Queens NY and I can honestly say I never ran into this issue. My very 1st dance school before I entered HSIf Performing Arts was in the heart of Rosedale. I took the bus, & all that as a preteen. I’m so sad to see this soooo close to home, but then again, look at our president?
