Three generations of Japan’s emperors and princes have enjoyed the beautiful Tamozawa Imperial Villa in Nikko. A mix of late Edo, Meiji and Taisho architecture, it was built toward the end of the 19th century as a summer retreat for the then Prince. Around this time, the country's long period of seclusion ended, and foreign diplomats and merchants came to Japan to live. Wishing to escape Tokyo’s hot, humid summers, Nikko's beauty and cool climate made it a sought-after summer playground.
