サザビーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (サザビーズInstagram)「‘Room Overlooking the Harbour’ by James-Jacques-Joseph Tissot shows a young woman reading in the dining-room of a seaside hotel on a warm summer’s day, enjoying the cooling ocean breeze through the open window. The model for the painting was Kathleen Newton, the great love of Tissot’s life who was simply referred to as ‘la mystérieuse’ for over half a century until her niece came forward with memoirs in 1971. From the moment Tissot saw Kathleen he was besotted with her but as an Irish Catholic divorcée she would have been considered déclassé in #Victorian society and therefore he could not marry her. They openly lived together in the artist’s London home, where invitations ceased to arrive as ‘Society’ turned its back on them both. _ The setting for the painting was probably the seafront rooms of a hotel in Ramsgate, one of the fashionable south-coast resorts in the late nineteenth century that was within easy reach of London.
