Painted in 1920, ‘An Edition de Luxe’ is John William Godward’s last tondo painting, unlocated when Vern Swanson published his first monograph on Godward in 1997 but reproduced in its full glory in his revised book of 2018, where he describes it as a ‘masterpiece’. Godward’s great technical skill, and his calling card, was in rendering fabrics in exquisite detail and contrasting soft, warm skin with cool polished marble.

A shy man, Godward had began to withdraw from the public eye by the opening decade of the 20th century. Enjoying commercial success during his lifetime and with no need to please the critics, he was able to paint what he wanted: languid ladies in Roman garb surrounded by beautiful objects and #flowers.
