Remembering Dame Laura Knight (4 August 1877 – 7 July 1970): In 1965 ‘The Picnic’ returned to the Royal Academy in #London for Knight’s one-woman exhibition more than 50 years after it was first shown in 1913, when the painting was originally a much larger composition showing six figures picnicking in a Cornish cliff-top meadow. The picture did not find a buyer with enough wall space and went back to Knight’s studio where it remained for over half a century, during which time the artist reduced the composition to three figures. The smaller painting attracted the attention of Sir John Smith, who wrote to the artist to ask if he could purchase it when the exhibition closed.
