Photo by @hoffmanbrendan | Malanka is an annual festival celebrated in a handful of villages in the Carpathian Mountains of western Ukraine, most famously Krasnoilsk, near the border with Romania. Taking place over a full 24 hours during the Orthodox New Year, or January 13-14 by modern calendars, revelers dress as bears, gypsies, old women, and more, visiting every house in the village to sing and perform skits drawn from ancient storylines, the origins of which no one can quite remember. By sundown of the second day, following a parade, the participants head home exhausted, frozen, and happy. #ukraine #malanka #krasnoilsk #carpathians
