Photos by @michaelgeorge | Chilean Patagonia’s Torres del Paine is the rare park where humans are true outsiders in a vast, legitimate wilderness. Though it occupies 930 square miles (2,400 sq km), the park received only 140,000 visitors throughout 2022. Compare that with Zion National Park, where last year close to 4.7 million people explored its 232-square-mile (600-sq-km) expanse.

This image was captured as I traveled over Lago Pehoé, which translates to “hidden lake.” The brilliant color is caused by glacial flour, or rock dust suspended in the water. Prior to visiting Torres del Paine, I presumed all photos I’d seen of it had the saturation turned up to exaggerate the colors. I was pleasantly surprised that this is not so—those colors are precisely how they look. It’s as if all the natural features that make a landscape beautiful are turned up a notch. In the distance you can see Macizo Paine, a group of mountains that look like broken teeth.
