Photo by Christian Ziegler @christianziegler | The annual Gegdrae festival in Bhutan is an ancient ritual that cleanses bad spirits from the village. I was lucky enough to witness this festival in a small village in Southern Bhutan. Villagers and a local lama walked through the village carrying burning branches and visited each house in turn, cleansing the home with fire and local rice wine. Finally the villagers passed through a burning arch of rice straw to prepare them for the coming year. Here you can see 1. Two men chanting at the entrance of a home and 2.
