Photo by @emilypolar | A Meru tower is the principal shrine of a Balinese temple. It is a wooden pagoda-like structure with multi-tiered thatched roofs made from ijuk fibers of the Arenga pinnata, a feather palm tree. These towers are identified with the Mount Meru of Hindu mythology, the abode of the Hindu gods. The number of roofs is always odd and reflects which deity, local pantheon or deified person the shrine is dedicated to.
