ガゴシアン・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ガゴシアン・ギャラリーInstagram)「The Whitney Museum of American Art recently acquired Mary Weatherford's "Pier 'n' Ocean" (2017), the first work by the artist in the museum’s permanent collection. This week, two major works by Weatherford will be presented in Basel during the fair. “Ruby, Ruby” (2019) will be on view at Gagosian’s group exhibition “Continuing Abstraction” at Rheinsprung 1, while "After Rousseau" (2019) will be presented at the gallery’s booth, C9. In these works, artistic gesture is manifested not only within painted segments but also in the single neon lights that bisect each composition. While the addition of this non-painterly material disrupts the sense of immediacy between the artist’s hand and the painted surface, the works present an alternative formulation of artistic mark making, one that evokes the extensive art historical tradition of gestural abstraction by using the neon as a form of drawing.
