Gates began his "Civil Tapestry" series in 2011 by salvaging decommissioned fire hoses and assembling them to create singular abstract works that are minimalist in appearance yet charged with history. In his artistic vocabulary, fire hoses are a pointed reference to the forceful subjugation of Black Americans by local authorities during the peaceful protests of the Civil Rights movement. By alluding to the use of sanctioned violence against innocent civilians, Gates underscores the continuing racial tensions of our time.
