World Oceans Day is all about celebrating our oceans and shining a light on the work that is being done to protect them. Taronga’s science and conservation teams are working to safeguard marine environments and the wildlife that inhabit them in various ways – from freezing coral cells to tracking marine turtles and studying sharks.
In collaboration with Macquarie University, Taronga researcher Jo Day has been studying the breeding behaviours and movements of Port Jackson shark populations in Sydney and Jervis Bay since 2012.
By tracking the movements of these sharks Jo and her team found that the Jervis Bay population would return to the same sites in Jervis Bay to breed each year.
The researchers also examined the genetic makeup of these populations and discovered key differences between the Sydney and Jervis Bay aggregations, despite the fact that their breeding grounds were less than 200km apart.
This research is so significant because it demonstrates the presence of distinctly differently populations of Port Jackson sharks in different areas – and the importance of specific habitats to those populations. #WorldOceansDay #togetherwecan
