UN World environment day is an opportunity for us to stop and reflect on the impact we have on our environment. This year’s theme is “beat air pollution”. We have all seen the impacts of air pollution with pale grey skies hanging over cities on a clear day, and friends or family struck with increased respiratory illness and asthma. It is estimated by the WHO (World Health Organisation) that 9 out of 10 people do not breath clean air and 7 million people die prematurely as a consequence. Some of the anthropogenic contributors are: the combustion of fossil fuels, agriculture, synthetic chemicals and poor waste management practices. What is less obvious is impacts of acid rain on forest habitats and coral reefs in parts of the world far removed from major cities. Our planet is a finite resource, but it is also incredibly resilient with a little care we have seen how things can improve. At Taronga we acknowledge running science labs, caring for animals and travelling to remote locations to conduct conservation programs requires lots of energy, which is why in 2019 we made sure our operations were certified 100% Carbon Neutral. Our new Taronga Institute of Science and Learning is one of Australia’s few 6 star green star rated buildings, and we have recently established 500kW PV solar energy source on site. But we all have a role to play in tackling this global issue - as a nation, an organisation and of course as individuals.
