Did you ever wonder how Vans shoes got the signature “Waffle” pattern on the sole? Swipe left to check out their 1968 manufacturing mold.
Vans uses a vulcanized shoe making process where the rubber outsoles are heated and stretched onto the “lasted upper” of the shoe before the rubber is completely cured. The entire shoe is then heated to over 300 degrees. This process creates a ‘sticky’ sole popular with skaters for ensuring a good contact surface with their board.
This weekend, @si_invention is in London for the 7th @Innoskate which will explore skate culture’s creative spirit and history of innovation—and we’ll be following along on social media and sharing skateboarding history.
