Painted in 1991, ‘L’Arbre de Phyllis’ is a triumphant conclusion to Joan Mitchell’s long and exceptional artistic evolution. This painting was named for Mitchell’s close friend and artistic protégé Phyllis Hailey, who lived with the artist in her rural estate in Vétheuil, France in 1974 – just four years before Hailey’s untimely death in 1978. Executed over a decade later, ‘L’Arbre de Phyllis’ serves as poignant tribute to Hailey, named for a ginkgo tree in the artist’s gardens whose foliage Hailey repeatedly rendered in her watercolor studies. Blooming upon the canvas in a shower of expressive brushstrokes and vibrant color, the work exemplifies the vigor and vibrancy which define the artist’s finest masterworks.
