✏️🐦This is a drawing of one of our white-naped cranes named Walnut. She lives at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. When Walnut arrived as an adult, she had never successfully bred or raised chicks, because she was imprinted on humans. She was the most genetically valuable white-naped crane living in a zoo in North America. Since there are so few white-naped cranes in human care and in the wild, it is important that every crane's genes are passed on to prevent a genetic bottleneck. One of our keepers slowly won Walnut's trust until she would participate in artificial inseminations without anesthesia. Her fertile eggs were given to experienced crane pairs to raise. As a result, she has had 7 chicks. #DrawABirdDay
