Fishing cat numbers are dwindling in the wild, which means it is important to have a healthy population in human care that is having kittens. But fishing cats have been notoriously difficult to breed in human care. Our scientists found a few tricks that will encourage the cats to breed and recently published their research in Zoo Biology. 1. Give a breeding pair ample time to get acquainted. Ideally, at least three months. 2. Foster strong relationships with their keepers through things like positive reinforcement training sessions. 3. Give them the choice to spend time on exhibit or in private spaces. 4. Listen for friendly vocalizations to potential breeding partners. #WeSaveSpecies

heather_gornak While I think it’s great to be “saving species” I think we need to focus more on WHY the species needs to be saved in the first place. Isn’t habitat loss the major cause of this cats endangerment? Wouldn’t HUMANS thus be the problem? This is very contradicting.
