Found only within U.S. waters, this species spends two-thirds of its time at sea and is believed to have been present on the Hawaiian Islands for several million years. Hunted to the brink of extinction in the late 19th century, this seal’s population has been continuing to decline, but there are two simple actions you can take to help save it! If you see a monk seal on the beach, make sure to give it plenty of space – this species is used to solitude, and females have been known to permanently abandon their pups if they are disturbed by people. Focus on reducing your use of plastics and recycle whenever possible – keeping our oceans and beaches clean is another great way to help this and many other marine creatures.
