Late night journaling. Reminiscing about my desert days where the pace of living was slower, when time somehow seemed slower too, and paradoxically I seemed to get more done. Boring every day things were no longer boring. Little details of the day brought joy to my heart. Like the way the pre-dusk sun would shine on my bookshelf near the kitchen. Or the cool pale colors of the morning sky. The smell of spices in the desert air. The sound of crackling as I cooked. Seeing the roadrunners scurry across the yard. I didn’t have the conveniences of a microwave, dishwasher, oven or even a coffee pot. I had a gas-powered stovetop and I made my coffee the old fashioned way. At first it was an adjustment after having been in the thick of city life in Philadelphia, but swiftly those “inconveniences” and the slower pace became treasured gifts. I appreciated things more, life itself really. Routines became precious rituals. Anxiety dissipated. My soul content. And where my heart first blossomed with my husband before fate brought our paths together again. I will always dote on my time in the Southwestern desert, but now I have different dreams, one in the country, with my love and the warmth of our beautiful family.
