The tamaraw or Mindoro dwarf buffalo is a small hoofed mammal that can only be found on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. The tamaraw was originally found all over Mindoro, but because of human habitation, hunting, and logging, it is now restricted to only a few remote grassy plains and is listed as a critically endangered species. Recognizing what was at stake, the local government began efforts to breed this species in the 1980s and made raising awareness and building pride around this species at the national level a top priority. Students of the Far Eastern University are currently working with World Wildlife Fund and additional partners on the “Tamaraw Times Two by 2020” project which aims to double the number of tamaraws from 300 to 600 by the year 2020.
