Marinated onions on the counter (recipe found @nocrumbsleft), and some thoughts on minimalism after sorting through our stored boxes yesterday and a burgeoning inbox with questions on how we have so little, what did we keep in the boxes, etc. Most everything we own is secondhand, unless, on RARE occasion, we can purchase items from artists we admire. We’ve been gifted items in the past as well, like the @throceramics bowl that the onions are marinating in. Even art is secondhand, with the exception of a purchase from @sarah.hart.landolt, because I had to have it. We have several pieces wrapped carefully in storage, things too big for the Airstream. Otherwise, on board the Airstream, we have clothes, kitchen items, books, toys, linens, rugs, a few lamps, a plant, and some minimal decor, like baskets and candlesticks. When living small, I’ve found that I can make things feel cozy and homey without busyness by using kitchen items as secondary decor. There isn’t a need for a bunch of extra. In storage, we have sentimental things...love letters between Ellen and I, dried and pressed flowers. Our early days. Things we gathered on our travels, Adelaide’s earned junior ranger badges and artwork she gave us. There’s a few lamps, antique and expensive both, that would be tough to replace - and we do want to have a house again someday. Some of my late grandfather’s books, brass candlesticks from my great-grandmother’s collection, survive on. Truly, I may not be the best minimalist. I’m sentimental and I believe things like letters from your wife and daughter should always be kept. I love to thrift and find beautiful pieces, and joke with Ellen that I might be a closeted maximalist, because if space weren’t a defined limitation for me, I’d buy so many incredible pieces. I miss buying furniture, I’m always passing up so much, but I have no idea what the future holds - so it’s better to remain light until we know the arc of things. I’ve realized it’s not a badge of honor (for me) to live so leanly that I part with things I didn’t want to part with, and that it’s okay to want to hit the thrift stores and support other artists. ***Continued in comments.
